Shelter is a collection inspired by the comfort, memory, and quiet protection found in the quilts of Southern Appalachia.Raised in the foothills of North Carolina, artist Kirksey Lowther understands that a quilt is far more than a blanket. It is a sanctuary stitched together, passed down through generations. It carries the scent of a grandmother's home, offers warmth, and creates a sense of safety that lingers long after childhood.

 Quilts gather families around crowded tables, cushion afternoons spent beside rivers and fields, and transform ordinary spaces into forts, hideaways, and places of rest. Through this body of work, Lowther explores quilts as symbols of shelter—both physical and emotional. Quilts preserve stories and hold history within their layers. Their worn patches, sewn together from fabrics that existed long before us, become vessels of memory, connecting the past and present.

Influenced by early botanical illustrations, folk art traditions, and the Impressionist movement, Lowther's paintings celebrate the beauty of the Appalachian region while honoring the objects and traditions that have quietly sheltered generations.
